The Madison Scouts are pleased to announce that Sean Phelan and Mark Trulson have been named as Brass Co-Caption Heads and Scott Carr as Assistant Caption Head of the brass program. They will be working with newly appointed Brass Program Director Chris Tomsa (MORE HERE).Sean Phelan, Co-Caption Head
Sean Phelan serves as an Associate Instructor in the Department of Bands at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music while working towards the Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting. From 2013 to 2016, Sean was Director of Orchestras and Associate Director of Bands at Oconomowoc High School in Wisconsin, during which time he was also principal bassist and then Music Director of the Lake Country Orchestra.Sean has been part of the Madison Scouts since 2007, starting in the horn line and then as drum major, receiving the Jim Jones Leadership Award from Drum Corps International in 2012. He joined the instructional staff as a brass instructor in 2013. Sean has been an adjudicator for the Wisconsin School Music Association marching band circuit and continues to design, arrange, and consult with several marching programs across the Midwest.Mark Trulson, Co-Caption Head
Mark Trulson earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts and worked as a Music Teacher at the Nixon Elementary School (MA) and as the Low Brass Instructor at Boston College. For the past fifteen years, Mark has been the Instrumental Music Director and Department Chair for Visual and Performing Arts at Alhambra High School (CA) overseeing several award winning ensembles.Mark’s performance career includes two years playing Contra with the Melrose Explorers Drum and Bugle Corps and two years with the Blue Knights of Denver, Colorado. On stage he has performed with Kim Richmond, Bob Mintzer and Max Roach. As an educator, he was on the brass staff for the Royal Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps in the early 90’s and East Coast Jazz from 2000-2003. Most recently, Mark was the tuba tech (2012-2015) and then the Co-caption head (2015-2017) of the Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps.Scott Carr, Assistant Caption Head
Scott returns for his 2nd year on the Scouts brass staff. He received his bachelors of music education in 2001 from Indiana State University where he was involved with the ISU Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Indiana State Marching Sycamores. He performed on contra for the Star of Indiana (1992, 1993) as well as the Bluecoats, Crossmen, and Troopers.Scott has been a staff member with the Phantom Regiment (2005), Blue Stars (2006-12), and Bluecoats (2015-16). Scott has also served as director of bands at Orleans Jr/Sr High School, Northeast Dubois Jr/Sr High School, assistant at Bedford Middle School, and assistant director of bands at Owen Valley High School. During his time at each of these school his bands, guards, and ensembles have earned gold or superior ratings at ISSMA, IHSCGA, and Mid-States events. He currently works for the Hoosier Hills Economic Development Corporation in the Head Start division.
