Alumni and Friends of the Madison Scouts present the 15th annual Rockin’ For A Cure 2015, a Live Music Benefit for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the Radisson Hotel Ballroom starting at 6:00 p.m.
This year's event features a fantastic music line-up including the Jim Ott Brass Ensemble Third Coast joined by the Madison Scouts Alumni Performance Group, The Black Star Drum Line, the hard driving blues of Lazydeadpoet, and R&B favorites from The Soul Brothers. The admission ($20 advance/$30 at door) provides you live music, appetizers, silent auction, and an opportunity to reunite with other Madison Scouts Alumni while supporting the ALS cause started by Scouts Alum, Steve Weekes, who marched in the Scouts in ‘81-‘83 and instructed ‘84-‘88.In 1999, Weekes was diagnosed with ALS and quickly founded the live music benefit named "Rockin’ for A Cure", which debuted in 2000. Sadly, Steve died in 2005, but his spirit and efforts to cure ALS live on through the success of the benefit which has raised tens of thousands for research and patient services in Wisconsin. All proceeds benefit The ALS Association Wisconsin Chapter.Jim Ott Brass Ensemble Third CoastThe Jim Ott Brass Ensemble Third Coast is a Wisconsin regional extension of the original tribute group, which was formed in Stockton, California. The hip hop drum group, Black Star Drum Line, was founded in 2008 by music producer, drummer, educator, and Madison Scouts Alum, Joey Banks. The Black Star Drum Line is part of the D.R.U.M. program (Diversity, Respect, Unity, Music), which is a program developed by Joey Banks for the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County on Madison's west side neighborhood.
The program teaches young children between the ages of 9-15 years old diversity, respect, unity through music, and discipline, through the very technical drum corps style of drumming and performance. The most dedicated talented members in the D.R.U.M program are selected to perform in the Black Star Drum Line.
