Ryan has spent most of his life involved in the marching arts as a performer, instructor, adjudicator, and administrator. As a performer, Ryan marched six seasons with the Glassmen Drum & Bugle Corps and while obtaining his B.A. in Economics from the University of Cincinnati. He began teaching visual performance and movement technique for high school marching bands and winter guards in the Cincinnati region. For more than 25 years, he has judged visual and design analysis captions at marching band and winter guard events across the country and was a founding member of the Tri-State Judges Association.Since 2000, Ryan has served as Chairman of the Board for the Pride Youth Development Foundation, sponsors of the 6-time WGI Independent World Class Champion, Pride of Cincinnati Winter Guard in addition to other youth athletic and performance organizations in the greater Cincinnati area. Professionally, Ryan has spent two decades in the field of corporate Learning & Development and is currently the Director of Transformation for a multi-national financial services firm based in Boston, MA.Brice Bach, Visual Tech
Brice began his marching career in 2009 with the open class Velvet Knights, moved to The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps for the 2010-2012 seasons, then finished his DCI marching career with the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.Brice started his teaching career as a visual technician in 2012 and has instructed and designed for many programs in both Arizona and Virginia. He attended Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona majoring in music education and trumpet performance before accepting a position with the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps in Washington D.C. where he still performs today as a mellophone bugler.Jeff Carnall, Visual Tech
Jeff Carnall received his undergraduate degree in Music Education with a Jazz Studies Minor from Ball State University and is currently the Band Director at Schmucker Middle School and an Assistant Director with the Penn High School Marching Band in Mishawaka, Indiana. Under his direction, the Schmucker bands have received consistent Gold ratings at the Indiana State School Music Association's organizational contest for Middle School.Mr. Carnall guest conducted the All-Region Honor Band on six different occasions and has been a frequent clinician for the IMEA non competitive festival. Mr.Carnall has also been a guest clinician and adjudicator for schools in the Michiana area and has been an adjudicator for ISSMA Solo and Ensemble, Junior High/Middle School/High School Organizational Festival, and ISSMA Jazz Contest. Mr. Carnall was inducted into the Indiana chapter of Phi Beta Mu and is also a member of ISSMA and IBA.Myles Giller, Visual Tech
Myles was a member of the Blue Knights as a mellophone player in 2012 and 2013 and then served as drum major from 2014 - 2016. He was most recently on the visual team with the Trooper in 2017 and 2018. Myles has taught with various programs in the Central Florida and East Texas areas, including Sebring High School Marching Band (FL), RGB Percussion (FL), Haines City High School (FL), Westfield High School (TX), Warner University Royalty Indoor Percussion (FL), and RPT Percussion (FL).Myles is currently pursuing a BS in Health Sciences Pre-Clinical at the University of Central Florida in Orlando where he plans to graduate in the Spring of 2019.Julian Gonzalez, Visual Tech
A native of Nashville, TN, Julian Gonzalez was a performing member of Music City Mystique and Spirit of Atlanta. Since 2009 he has been teaching Percussion and Visual programs throughout the United States. His work includes visual design, staging, choreography and show consultation from theater to marching arts programs. He is also an active visual judge along the eastern United States.Julian has taught the Blue Knights Percussion Ensemble, Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps, Phantom Regiment, Spirit of Atlanta, Music City Mystique, and most recently the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps. Tim Heichelheim is an educator and performer from Vancouver, Washington. He serves as the Director of Bands at Skyview High School and Alki Middle School. Having a plethora of DCI experience, Tim marched Seattle Cascades 2004-2006 then continued to march with Santa Clara Vanguard 2007-2009. After aging out, he was the lead percussion visual instructor for Spirit of Atlanta 2010-2011, and then served as the assistant visual caption head for the Crossmen 2013-2015.Tim has worked with many high schools in the Portland Metro Area. He earned his Bachelors in Music Education and Masters in Education (Curriculum and Development) from Portland State University. Tim is also a freelance musician around Portland, one of the owners and founding members of The 1905 Jazz Club, as well as the band leader for The River City Roit! Brass Band. Tim also serves as the Visual Caption Head of Affinity Indoor Winds for their inaugural season.Dan Hoffman, Visual Tech
Dan Hoffman is a freelance drill writer and marching arts visual educator based out of Mesa, AZ. Born and raised in Syracuse, NY, Dan graduated from the University of Rochester in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a Minor in Dance. His education is supplemented by ample performance experience, including three seasons as a contra player with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps and one year as a Collaborator with Evolve Dynamicz, a dance collective based out of Cambridge, MA.As an educator, Dan began his career as a marching band visual technician with his alma mater West Genesee High School in Camillus, NY. He then served as the drill writer and visual caption head at Medford High School in Medford, MA, from 2016-2018. During that time period, he was also a visual technician with the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. Since moving to Arizona in August of 2018, he has assumed visual technician positions with Casa Grande Union High School’s marching band, Highland High School’s marching band, and Breakthrough Indoor Percussion. Dan is thrilled to bring his passions for movement and somatic awareness to the 2019 edition of the Madison Scouts.Karl Koemmpel, Visual Tech
Karl was first introduced to Drum Corps in 2007, during the DCI World Championships in Pasadena, CA. He marched mellophone with the Cascades in 2009 & 2010 and then with the Blue Devils 2012 & 2013. Karl has worked with many high schools in the Northwest as well as the Southern California area.Karl received a B.A. in Music from Central Washington University and currently lives in Denton, Texas where he is the Assistant Director for Box 7 Ministries. Karl was part of the Crossmen Visual Program from 2014-2017, the Blue Stars Visual Programs in 2018-2019, and is excited to serve with the Madison Scouts this year.Chris Law, Visual Tech
Chris resides in greater London, England. He first became involved in drum corps at 9 years of age and has ever since been involved as a performer/instructor/designer. He has performed with various groups in the UK and USA, winning multiple British and European championships.Since 2013, Chris has been involved with a number of U.S. programs and has carried out the role of Instructor/Caption Head/Designer with the Trinity High School (2009), Black Knights Drum Corps (2011-2013), Oracle Winterguard (2015-Present), Beeches Performance Ensemble (2015-Present), The Company (2015-2016), Blue Devils B (2016), Kidsgrove Scouts (2017), and Madison Scouts (2017-Present).Greg Mea, Visual Tech
Greg started his drum corps career in 2009 as a member of the Reading Buccaneers Drum and Bugle Corps from Reading, PA. He then spent 4 summers marching with the Phantom Regiment from Rockford, IL, from 2011 to 2014. He also spent 2 years as a member of the visual ensemble for the WGI World Class United Percussion in 2013 and 2014. Greg spent the summer of 2015 as a member of the visual staff at Spirit of Atlanta.Outside of his drum corps experience, he has an extensive history working with marching bands, indoor drum lines, and concert ensembles in the Greater Philadelphia Area. He has also worked as a band director in New Jersey, Texas, and currently resides in Glendale, AZ, where he serves as the band director at Cimarron Springs and Riverview Elementary Schools.Tony Mencio, Visual Tech
Tony Mencio was born and raised in Cedar Park, TX. He is a 2007 graduate of Cedar Park High School, and his performance experience includes 4 years with the Santa Clara Vanguard as a trumpet player (2008-2011). He proudly graduated from The University of North Texas in the Spring of 2015.Tony currently is the Director of Music at Arlington Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, TX where he is responsible for the Marching and Concert bands, Orchestra, Varsity and Non-Varsity Choirs, and Classical Guitar classes. Ryan Oster is a Music Education student in his final year at the University of North Texas. Along with his classes, Ryan has worked with various schools in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (Newman Smith High School, Denton Guyer High School, Northwest High School, Azle High School) where he has acted as a Marching Band Technician with an emphasis on visual technique, choreography, and design and most recently has started to work with Indoor Winds.Ryan was a member of the University of North Texas Green Brigade for 3 years, the Madison Scouts for 3 years (2015-2017), and was on the visual staff of the Madison Scouts (2018). Ryan also works closely with Forward Performing Arts’ leadership program and has gone to teach at different schools and the University of Texas-Arlington Drum Major and Leadership Camp.Emily Starkey, Visual Tech
Emily attended Wright State University in Dayton, OH for music education. After graduating, Emily found she had a great passion for teaching others while consistently striving to add to her knowledge base. She immediately embraced her role as a visual specialist in 2010 at Milford High School (OH) and has gone on to teach other world class programs in southern Ohio. Emily has been blessed with the opportunity to work side by side with some of the countries best drill designers and learn from their experiences. Emily looks forward to becoming an intricate member of the Madison Scouts team as she continues her growth as an educator.
