Jay is a native of Southern California and an Alumnus of Pacific Crest, RCC, and the Blue Devils. Upon aging out of DCI, Jay was on the Visual Staff for the Blue Devils ‘B’ Corps from 2013-2016 and in 2017 became Visual Caption Head for the Madison Scouts.During the Fall and Winter seasons Jay serves as Visual Caption Head at Ayala High School, Brass Caption Head at Etiwanda High School, Visual Caption Head for POW Percussion, and is on the Visual Staff at RCC. Outside of the United States, Jay has worked with Black Knights Drum & Bugle Corps (England), Patria Drum & Bugle Corps (Guatemala), Life Music Corps (Guatemala), and Beeches Performance Ensemble (England).Jay is an educator, consultant, and drill designer based in Rancho Cucamonga, California.Nathan Banegas, Assistant Caption Head

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Nathan began his drum corps career with Forte Drum and Bugle Corps in 2010 after graduating high school. He would then continue on to march with The Blue Devils for 3 seasons from 2011-2013, helping earn the corps 15th title in 2012, as well as earning the high visual performer award "Sweet Feet" in the same year. He began his teaching career at Destrehan high school (Destrehan, LA) and Lafayette high school (Lafayette, LA) during the off season. Immediately after aging out, Nathan’s drum corps instructional experience began, consisting of teaching the Louisiana Stars in 2014 during its inaugural season and again in 2015 and teaching at Blue Devils B from 2014 to 2016.As of recent, Nathan has moved to Southern California and teaches at multiple high schools such as Mayfair High School, Ayala high school, and Fountain Valley high school. When he’s not in the marching band scene, Nathan is an avid trumpet player who plays at gigs during the holidays and gives private lessons. This will be Nathan’s second year on the Madison Scouts Visual staff.Chris Law, Assistant Caption Head

Chris resides in greater London, England. He first became involved in drum corps at 9 years of age and has ever since been involved as a performer/instructor/designer. He has performed with various groups in the UK and USA. Winning multiple British and European championships. Since 2013 Chris has been involved with a number of high school band programmes in the California area and has carried out the role of Instructor/Caption head/Designer with the following groups.Trinity High School (2009), Black Knights Drum Corps (2011-2013), Oracle Winterguard (2015-Present), Beeches Performance Ensemble (2015-Present), The Company (2015-2016), Blue Devils B (2016), Kidsgrove Scouts (2017), and Madison Scouts (2017).Ted Chang, Instructor

Born and raised in the 626 of Southern California, Ted Chang first discovered the world of music and motion when he joined his middle school marching band. Since then, Ted has been a part of the pageantry arts as a performer, and now a teacher/designer. He is currently the visual caption head for Arcadia High School, and teaches other programs such as Ayala High School and Cerritos High School. Other than teaching, Ted is also an active drill writer, and visual choreographer. He has written for many programs in Southern California, and as well as other state bands. Some of the schools that Ted has written for are Santiago High School (CA), and Wabash High School (IN). Ted marched in Pacific Crest from 2010-2011, before joining and aging out from the Blue Devils from 2012-2015. He was also a member of the RCC percussion ensemble in 2016. This will be Ted's second year with the Madison Scouts, and he cannot wait to see everyone again!Bryant Collins, Instructor

Bryant has been involved with the drum corps activity since 2010. As a marching member, he spent 4 seasons with both The Spirit of Atlanta and The Santa Clara Vanguard. Bryant was a member of The Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners and in 2013 moved to California to begin his teaching career, as well as accepting a trumpet position with the San Francisco 49ers’ “Niner Noise.”His teaching career includes The Amador Valley Marching Dons (2013-2015), California High School Marching Band (2016), Blue Devils C (2013-2016), Blue Devils B (2015-2016), and Madison Scouts (2017-Present). This will be Bryant’s 2nd year with the Madison Scouts.Noe Gomez, Instructor

Los Angeles native Noe Gomez has 7 years of drum corps experience, including 1 year with Impulse (2008), 1 year with The Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets (2010), and 5 years with The Santa Clara Vanguard (2011-15). Noe served as their drum major from 2012-15. Noe is currently a full time visual designer in California and around the country.Noe is currently teaching at the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets, Madison Scouts, Santa Clara Vanguard, POW Percussion, Rowland High School, La Quinta High School, Alta Loma High School, and Aliso Niguel High School. Noe is also serving as an Advisor for Color Guard Alliance of the Philippines (CGAP).Johnny Jagerman, Instructor

Johnny Jagerman was born and raised in Mission Viejo, CA and attended Laguna Hills High School as a part of the Class of 2014. During his Sophomore year of High School, he started playing Tuba. By the time summer rolled around, he was starting his drum corps career at Gold Drum and Bugle Corps in 2012.Johnny marched two seasons at Gold in 2012 and 2013, then went on to march with the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2014 and the Blue Devils from 2015-2017 serving as the Tuba Section Leader in 2017. Along the way through his drum corps career, Johnny was also a participant in WGI as a member of Pulse during 2014, 2015 and 2017 as well as Broken City in 2018. Johnny has also gone on to teach High Schools in the Southern California area including Ayala High School, Etiwanda High School, Savanna High School, and Woodbridge High School.Johnny is incredibly honored and excited to be teaching The Men of Madison for the Summer of 2018.Cody Lee, Instructor

This is Cody’s second year on the Visual staff at the Madison Scouts. Before marching in DCI, he began his marching career at Arroyo High School in El Monte, CA. Cody then went on to march with Pacific Crest, the Santa Clara Vanguard, and the Blue Devils, aging out in 2014. In 2015, he performed across Europe with the Blue Devils International corps. He is currently living in Southern California, working with Arcadia High School, Rowland High School, and Temple City High School.Casey McClary, Instructor

Casey McClary became involved in the marching arts by participating in community marching bands in his hometown of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. After a successful audition Casey marched in the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps in 2010, 2011, and 2012. During that time Casey attended the University of Calgary and holds a Bachelor of Music in Integrated Studies (Performance and Education). Casey graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education specializing in secondary music in June 2017, and is an aspiring band director. He has taught and worked as a freelance clinician for concert bands, youth orchestra, and marching bands in his home of Calgary, around Southern Alberta, and the Chicago area for a combined experience totaling seven years. He currently teaches the world champion Calgary Stampede Showband, and has taught with the Calgary Round-up band, Calgary Stetson Showband, and the Blue Devils 'B' corps.Ryan Oster, Intern

Ryan Oster is a student at the University of North Texas pursuing a degree in Music Education with a Trumpet Concentration. In DCI, Ryan has spent 3 years with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps (2015, 2016, and 2017) and has been a part of multiple groups who have received medals in Individual and Ensemble (I&E) competitions over the summer. Ryan has been a part of ensembles at the University of North Texas to include the Concert Band, Brass Band, Green Brigade Marching Band, Lab Band, 8 o’clock Steel Drum Band, and the Beginner Afro-Cuban Ensemble. Currently Ryan works with Denton Guyer High School in Denton, Texas as a Visual Tech.Julianne Pitchford, Instructor

Julianne Pitchford is a Riverside, CA native and resident. She began her marching career at Riverside Poly High School in 2009, marching all four years in high school and graduating in 2013. Since then she has continued her education at Riverside City College, majoring in music ed, and marching one fall season with the RCC Marching Tigers in 2013. Shortly after, she began her Drum Corps career with the Blue Devils B Drum & Bugle Corp in 2014. After completing her first season of Drum Corps,she auditioned for the Blue Devils A Drum & Bugle Corps, and was accepted as a mellophone member in 2015. After marching the past three seasons with the Blue Devils, and aging out in 2017, she has completed her Drum Corps career with one Open Class World Championship (2014), and two World Class World Championships (2015, 2017). In her free time, Julianne enjoys spending time with her family and friends, practicing her French horn, and traveling around Southern California. Looking into the future, Julianne is very excited to be continuing her Drum Corps career as a staff member with the 2018 Madison Scouts, and feels extremely fortunate to have been invited into such a respected organization.Brian Schutta, Instructor

Brian is super excited to be joining the visual team again for the 2018 season! Currently from the Twin Cities, Brian has been involved with teaching visual, music, and percussion in the marching arts activity since 2001 and has worked and consulted with various ensembles such as Eagan High School Winter Drumline, Anoka High School marching band, River City Rhythm Winter Drumline, Minnesota Brass Senior Drum Corps and Winter Drumline, Blue Stars Drum Corps, Irondale High School Winter Drumline and is currently on staff with the Irondale High School Marching Band program.Chris Harmon, Consultant

Chris Harmon joined the staff of L.D. Bell High School as Associate Director of Bands in the summer of 2016. Prior to moving to Texas, Mr. Harmon was the Director of Bands at Lake Central High School in St. John, Indiana from 1998-2016, and was the Director of Bands at Lowell High School in Lowell, Indiana from 1994-1997. Bands under his direction have consistently earned superior ratings at all contests and festivals. The Lake Central Marching Band was a consistent ISSMA Class A State Finalist, Bands of America (BOA) Regional Finalist, BOA Semi-Finalist, and was named the 2013 BOA Toledo Regional Champion. The Lake Central “Tribe of Pride” was also nominated four times for the prestigious Sudler Shield. Mr. Harmon received a Bachelor of Music Education from Wichita State University, a Master of Science in Music Education from the University of Illinois, and a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from Northwestern University.As a strong advocate for the importance of student leadership, Mr. Harmon co-presented a leadership session at the Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA) State Convention in January of 2016. In addition to teaching leadership sessions at schools and camps during his “free” time, Mr. Harmon was fortunate to have the student leaders from Lake Central used as the demonstration group for the book/DVD Classic Leadership by Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, published by GIA Publications.Mr. Harmon has been extensively involved in Drum Corps International as a performing member with the Sky Ryders (1980-1985), and the Madison Scouts (1986-1988). He was also a staff member for the Madison Scouts from 1989-2002, returning in 2016 as a visual consultant. Mr. Harmon’s professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Education, Indiana Music Educators Association, Indiana Bandmasters Association, International Association for Jazz Education, College Band Directors National Association (associate membership), and the International Trumpet Guild. He also served several terms on the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) State Board, as well as the ISSMA Marching Band Committee. Mr. Harmon was recently inducted into the Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Mu (international school bandmaster fraternity). He lives in Arlington, Texas with his wife Anne, daughter Chloe, and dog Miles.Ken Karlin, Consultant

Kenneth J. Karlin holds a degree in music from Ball State University, and also spent a year of study at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington. He has studied saxophone with Eugene Rousseau, Frank Bongiorno and George Wolfe. His jazz studies were with David Baker and Larry McWilliams.Mr. Karlin was an associate director of bands at James Logan High School in Union City, California from 1999-2012. James Logan is a comprehensive Bay Area high school with over 4,000 students enrolled. Mr. Karlin’s responsibilities there included three jazz big bands, jazz combos, coordinating the 250+ member marching band and staging the indoor winter percussion ensemble. He was the primary conductor of the symphonic band, the second of four wind bands on campus. He was an associate conductor for the wind symphony and two concert bands.During Mr. Karlin’s tenure at James Logan, the marching band won the Western Band Association championship eleven times. The marching band performed in the 1999 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as the 2003 Tournament of Roses parade. The James Logan Jazz Ensemble A and combo appeared regularly at the Reno Jazz Festival and the Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival. The James Logan winter percussion ensemble was a Scholastic World Class finalist at the Winter Color Guard International World Championships in 2004 and 2007. The James Logan Wind Symphony performed at the 2001 Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, the 2003 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, and appeared in 2006 at Carnegie Hall on a program with H. Robert Reynolds and the National Wind Ensemble. In 2009 the wind symphony appeared at the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference at the Cincinnati Conservatory.Mr. Karlin is in his sixth year as an associate director at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. His duties there include primary conductor of the wind symphony, the top symphonic wind band on campus, co-visual designer (along with Greg Hagen) for the Marching Giants and winter percussion ensemble, and director of jazz ensembles. During his tenure, the Marching Giants have been ISSMA state marching band finalists three times, and Bands of America Grand National Semi-Finalists four times and the winter percussion ensemble has been Scholastic World Class Finalists at the Winter Guard International World Championships twice. The jazz ensembles have produced an Indiana All-State bassist and have developed a small group improvisation curriculum as the centerpiece of the program. The wind symphony has consistently earned superior and excellent ratings in Group I at ISSMA organizational contest and appeared at the 2015 Music for All National Festival.Mr. Karlin is active as a movement coach and visual designer in the pageantry arts. Since 1995, he has been a member of the visual staff of the 18-time Drum Corps International World Champion Concord Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, and since 1999 has been the visual designer for the five-time DCI Open Class Champion Blue Devils B Drum and Bugle Corps. He was the visual designer for the 2008 DCI finalist Madison Scouts and 2004 BOA Grand Nationals finalist Ayala High School marching band. He began his drum corps career as a marching member of Star of Indiana where he went on to teach the corps from 1989-1992Zak Stillwell, Consultant

Zak Stillwell is a full time visual designer, instructor, and clinician based out of Fremont, California. He began his marching career as a performer in the Academy Drum and Bugle corps from Tempe, Arizona before spending four seasons with the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps in Concord, California. Having been active in the marching scene for over a decade, Zak has helped earn seven DCI world championships as an instructor and performer. In addition to his drum corps experience, Zak studied music education and euphonium performance at the University of Arizona, under the instruction of Dr. Kelly Thomas.An upcoming instructor and designer in the marching arts, Zak has taught and designed for high schools in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Ohio, and Texas. His work has consistently produced finalist finishes in BOA, WGI, and local circuits. Zak is excited to once again lend his expertise to the Madison Scouts visual program as a consultant for the 2018 season.Bill Zeier, ConsultantBill Zeier is a freelance graphic designer in the Dallas Metroplex Area. He has worked with Fortune 500 companies in web and print design. An alumnus of the Scouts, Bill was on the Scouts visual team from 1992-2001. He was a member of the visual staff of the Sky Ryders from 1988-1991 and Blue Devils visual staff from 2002-2008.Bill’s drum corps experience began as baritone player with the Sky Ryders and continued in the euphonium section of the Madison Scouts. He aged out of the Scouts in 1986. Mr. Zeier currently works with the L.D. Bell Blue Raider Band and the Prosper Mighty Eagle High School Marching Band. Bill’s marching bands have advanced to the Texas State Marching Competition at the 3A and 5A level placing in the top three in the state. Bill has also worked with marching bands participating in the Band of America competitions. His groups have medaled at the regional, super regional and national level.
