The Madison Scouts and Forward Performing Arts are excited to launch MadU, a virtual learning program. In response to the coronavirus crisis and cancellation of the 2020 Drum Corps International summer tour, the Madison Scouts educational team quickly developed a plan and coursework to keep current members engaged in lieu of the season.
"MadU provides students with the opportunity to experience a supportive community in a time where human connectivity is challenged," said Corps Director David Lofy. "As participants engage in this world-class educational environment, no lesson will be more important than learning how to face real-life challenges with the support of fellow corps members and MadU participants."
To broaden its reach, the Madison Scouts are actively accepting new participants in the MadU program who are interested in improving their performance skills, developing leadership capabilities, and gaining both group and individual instruction in their specific discipline. Educational tracks are available for brass players, battery percussionists, front ensemble percussionists, cymbal players, color guard (rifle, flag, saber), and conductors. In addition, there are Masterclass tracks for music composition techniques & tools, show design, health & fitness, and leadership development.
"MadU creates an opportunity for our organization to provide a truly well-rounded education for our students, which enriches the Madison Scouts member experience beyond the traditional bounds of the activity," stated Educational Director Nick Monzi. "By joining MadU, interested students will train amongst an extremely strong group of Scouts veterans and a world-class education team. For those who are aspiring members, the experience will provide the best possible preparation for an audition with the corps."
Open enrollment for MadU begins April 29th and rolling admissions will continue through May 31st. Students can access class content modules and schedule private virtual lessons at times that best fit their schedules. MadU 2020 includes 34 online educational sessions and over 37 hours of instruction. Students are required to have basic Internet service, computing device with web camera, and their own instrument or equipment.
Cost for the program is $400, which includes the audition fee for the 2021 season for eligible sections, a Madison Scouts t-shirt, lanyard, and wristband. Students who continue on through the audition process will have an opportunity to develop their skills with the instructors of the Madison Scouts!
